Mahogany Dining Table
Project Details
This custom pill-shaped mahogany dining table was designed and built for a client in Jacksonville, Florida as part of a larger project. The table was created to fit within a constrained dining space, requiring careful attention to both size and shape to ensure it functioned comfortably within the room.
The result is a handcrafted solid wood dining table with a clean, flowing profile and a durable base designed for everyday use.
Project Overview
Designed to Fit a Constrained Space
One of the key goals of this project was to design a dining table that fit perfectly within a limited space without sacrificing seating or functionality.
The pill-shaped design — sometimes referred to as an oval or racetrack table — was chosen because it allows for smoother traffic flow around the table while maximizing usable seating.
The softened ends and curved edges make it easier to move around the table in tighter spaces, while still providing a generous surface for dining and gathering.
Why Mahogany Makes a Great Dining Table
Mahogany is a premium hardwood known for its rich color, stability, and workability. It has a warm tone with subtle grain patterns that give it a refined, timeless appearance.
Mahogany is well-suited for dining tables because it offers:
- excellent durability for daily use
- dimensional stability over time
- a smooth, consistent grain
- a classic, high-end look
Its natural color deepens slightly over time, allowing the table to develop even more character as it ages.
Trestle X Base with Wedged Tenon Joinery
The base of this table features a trestle-style X design, providing both structural strength and visual balance.
To enhance both durability and craftsmanship, the base was constructed using wedged through-tenon joinery. This traditional method not only creates a strong mechanical connection but also becomes a visible design element that reflects the quality of the build.
The trestle base allows for:
- improved legroom
- even weight distribution
- a clean, balanced look
The Finishing Process
The table was finished using Osmo Polyx-Oil in a satin sheen to protect the wood while enhancing its natural appearance.
This finish provides:
- a durable, protective surface
- resistance to everyday wear
- a low-sheen, natural look that highlights the grain
Osmo Polyx-Oil is ideal for dining tables because it allows the wood to retain its natural feel while offering reliable protection for daily use.
Marine-Grade Graphene Coating for Durability
After the oil finish, the table received an application of MorningWood Company’s marine-grade graphene coating.
This added layer provides:
- increased durability
- enhanced moisture resistance
- improved protection against wear and daily use
The combination of oil and graphene coating helps ensure the table maintains its appearance while standing up to everyday use.
The Finished Table
The completed table is a clean, functional piece designed specifically for the client’s space. The pill-shaped design softens the overall look, while the mahogany provides warmth and depth.
The combination of traditional joinery, thoughtful design, and durable finishing results in a table that is both practical and visually refined.
