Brown Ebony Live Edge Dining Table

This custom brown ebony live edge dining table was built for a client in Jacksonville, Florida. The goal of this project was to highlight the natural beauty and unique character of the slab while creating a durable, long-lasting table for everyday use.

The client supplied their own table base, and our focus was on preparing, finishing, and bringing out the full depth and richness of the brown ebony slab.

Brown ebony is a dense hardwood known for its rich, dark coloration and dramatic contrast in the grain. Unlike traditional ebony, which can be nearly black, brown ebony features a blend of deep brown tones with darker streaking that creates a bold, natural pattern.

This type of wood is prized for its:

• unique grain variation
• rich, warm color tones
• high density and durability

Because of its character and visual depth, brown ebony makes an excellent choice for live edge tables where the natural beauty of the slab is the focal point.

For this project, the slab was carefully prepared to preserve the natural live edge while ensuring a smooth, functional surface for daily use.

Special attention was given to:

• maintaining the organic edge of the slab
• leveling and flattening the surface
• highlighting the grain and color variation

Since the client provided the base, the tabletop was finished and fitted to integrate seamlessly with the existing design.

To protect and enhance the wood, the table was finished using a combination of high-quality products designed for both beauty and durability.

Osmo Smart Oil was applied to bring out the natural depth and richness of the brown ebony. This finish enhances the grain while providing a durable, low-sheen protective layer.

After the oil finish, the table received an application of MorningWood Company’s marine-grade graphene coating.

This added layer provides:

• increased durability
• enhanced moisture resistance
• improved protection against wear and daily use

The combination of oil and graphene coating helps ensure the table maintains its appearance while standing up to everyday use.

The completed table showcases the natural beauty of the brown ebony slab, with deep tones and striking grain patterns that make it a true one-of-a-kind piece.

The live edge adds an organic element to the design, while the finish enhances both the appearance and durability of the wood.

This table was designed to serve as a functional dining surface while also acting as a statement piece in the home.
